Health, Immunity, and COVID-19
This was a topic a friend of mine asked me to speak on. He prepared some research, and I also prepared my own. It is important to understand that as of the time and date of this post (04.05.2020 @ 2:20 PM), there is no cure for COVID-19.
HALO Factors that deal with the kind of immunization you should seek are:
- Health
- Age
- Lifestyle
- Occupation
This video deals mostly with Health.
As it stands, many of us seek health care when it is too late; we seek it once there are symptoms of some underlying problem. And our Health Care systems are fantastic at fixing these symptoms and restoring our health; however, treating a symptom is not the same as actually addressing the overall cause of the problem.
Doctors want to see you healthy, and they would prefer that you are in the best health possible. Being healthy reduces the likelihood that you will contract an infection.
Exercise studies performed on rats show that moderate exercise performed 3-5 times per week can actually increase immune health and make it less likely for a rat to become ill.
However, a study presented at the NIH called Exercise and Respiratory Tract Viral Infections showed that if rats were put to excessive exercise to the point of exhaustion while they were sick, many of them died. Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2803113/
So, prolonged exercise is not the answer when someone is sick. However, prior to sickness, exhaustive exercise may be beneficial to one’s overall health. But please understand that immediately after intense exercise, the kind that pushes a body towards exhaustion, the body is more susceptible to infections because it is literally breaking down prior to recovery.
We cannot inject viruses into humans, but we can inject them into rats to see how they react. In another study called “Is Exercise Protective Against Influenza-Associated Mortality?”, we find: “When compared with never or seldom exercise, exercising at low to moderate frequency is beneficial with lower influenza-associated mortality.” Source: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0002108
Another article also seems to come to the conclusion that “Chronic Exercise Reduces Illness Severity, Decreases Viral Load, and Results in Greater Anti-Inflammatory Effects than Acute Exercise during Influenza Infection.” What this means is that, the more you exercise prior to being infected, the less severe your influenza could be if you do contract it. Source: https://academic.oup.com/jid/article/200/9/1434/851906
Now, we don’t know enough about COVID-19 to say that the way the body behaves with influenza is the same as how it may behave with COVID-19. However, if COVID-19 acts similarly to other viruses, then perhaps exercise may also be a way to prevent an intense infection from happening.
Please note that there are always exceptions. Healthy people who have have great diets and exercise often can still get sick; however, I call such people statistical anomalies. For the most part, there seems to be a correlation between good health and being less susceptible to disease.
It is important to exercise regularly, moderately, and even intensely when not sick. During a sickness, it is best to rest and consult your doctor.
Apart from exercise, it is also recommended that you do whatever you can to reduce inflammation in your body by following a proper diet of fruits, vegetables, fresh meats, and healthy fats. I am not going to prescribe any specific diet because that is out of the realm of this video; however, if you’re chomping down on junk food during this pandemic, and you’re constantly watching the news, and you’re not exercising, you are putting your body into a toxic state, and that can be grounds for inflammation and disease.
Along with properly eating, you also need be mindful of when not to eat. It has been shown that intermittent fasting is linked to cell autophagy where the cells eat themselves for energy source, and this cleanses the body. A 24 hour fast can spike a 300% increase in autophagosomes, which is a sign that autophagy is taking place. Source: https://besynchro.com/blogs/blog/the-profound-benefits-of-fasting-and-autophagy
Take care of your mind, body, and soul during this time. See a chirpractor if you need to, get a massage if you need to (of course, respect social distancing, and only see such specialists when the curve flattens). During this time, you can still take care of your body, and you need to. By doing so, you may reduce the likelihood of you being hurt by this infection.
Take care of yourself.
